So I caved. My patience wore out. I went to Plum Market with my 10% off coupon in hand, and picked up an armful of oysters. I also picked up a bottle of Pernod (which I feel is for cooking....not drinking...though I did attempt to craft a couple of different cocktails with it) to splash into sauce for the oysters. Once home, I crafted three different oysters dishes inspired by recipe searches online.
I'm getting impatient for our move to Savannah. Part of that impatience revolves around wanting access to a plethura of cheap seafood: shrimp, crawfish, oysters, clams, mussels, etc. Up here in the mitten, oysters don't come cheap. And tasty as they are, I feel scammed ordering them in restaurants for $3 apiece. At Bernie's in Savannah, you get a pitcher of beer and a bucket of oysters for 20 bucks. Why is that amazing deal not part of my daily life yet? Shuck raw oysters and keep oysters attached to shell. Saute chopped bacon, spinach, and shallots. Grate a sharp white cheddar cheese. Place the oysters on a broil-safe pan. Sprinkle the bacon mixture and cheddar on top of the oysters. Drizzle Pernod over the smothered oysters and broil until brown and crisp on top.
All three recipes were delish and fun to experiment with. But my favorite? Steamed with cocktail sauce and lemon. It's beautiful thing when the best recipes is the easier one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Hopefully this tides me over until we make our move. If not, I'm sure Plum Market will send along another coupon.

About LizI love teaching. I do. But since I started teaching four years ago, it's defined my entire life. What did I do before I became a teacher? I shopped, cooked, decorated, played dress-up, and went out on the town. And I'm reclaiming that past and all-too-infrequent-in-the-present life of mine! Good Reads* Anthromollogies
