Last night we went to the 89X Stole Christmas show at the EMU Convocation Center. I bought tickets the morning they went on sale, not realizing it was for The Killers. Tegan & Sara posted they were playing at EMU on December 20th. I bought tickets. When they arrived, I realized the show was actually for The Killers with Tegan & Sara opening. Kyle and I like The Killers but only know their stuff that plays on the radio, so in preparation for the concert, we picked up their latest CD and loaded Pandora with some of their music, and happily found that we really dig their music as well.
Tegan & Sara played a short 40-minute set, but they played songs from several albums spanning the last decade. Their new album Heartthrob comes out on January 29th, and we got to hear a preview of some of those tracks.
Heartthrob, like their past few albums, has a fresh sound. The Con came out a few years back and was their darkest album with sharp emotion and raw edge. Sainthood moved more in the pop direction and was layered with synth, shine, and mechanical instrumentation. Heartthrob sounds like it’s taking the poppy electronica of Sainthood even farther with a more upbeat, charged, and techno vibe. They’ve come a long way from their indie, folksy roots, and I’ve loved every stage of their evolution. Their poetic lyrics are packed with metaphor, emotion, and wordplay, and their skilled lyricism is ever-present even as their instrumentation and sound change.
It’s not just all physical
I’m the type who will get oh so critical
So let’s make things physical
I won’t treat you like you’re oh so typical
- "Closer" by Tegan & Sara
As for The Killers: super awesome. This is probably the English teacher arts nerd coming out, but their performance was so cohesive from the music to the lighting to the video screen flashing in the background to the pyrotechnics and the confetti streaming. It was fun and loud and high-energy and emotional and intense and the religious, cathartic experience a rockin’ concert should be.
Raising shadows in the moonlight
Takin chances on a hot night
And for a second there we were
Yeah, we were innocent and young
- "Miss Atomic Bomb" by The Killers
I knew that when I met you, I’m not gonna let you runaway
I knew that when I held you, I wasn’t lettin’ go
- "Runaway" by The Killers
